Tooth Extraction

Fear of dental offices and dentists is a real condition. It probably stems from the leftover effects of early days of dentistry when there was no anesthetic and only crude tools. Lifetime oral care was not the goal of dentists in those times. A person only saw a dentist when they were already in pain or had other problems. A trip to the dentist almost always involved pain then. Having a tooth pulled had to be a horrible experience.

Today, tooth pulling (tooth extraction) is not a traumatic experience anymore. While an extraction removes an entire tooth (root and all) from the jawbone, modern medicine and dental technology have made the procedure as painless as possible. Even the injection of the anesthetic is dulled with the application of a numbing gel on the gums beforehand. If any pain is felt during the procedure, additional anesthetic is administered to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.

After the area around the damaged tooth is numb, the dentist will gently rock the tooth back and forth until it pulls free. Ideally, the tooth will come out in one piece, but if it has already been broken or is weak, it may have to be removed in pieces.
