Root Canal
The goal of Baum Dental Clinic in Mineral Wells, Texas, is to promote good oral health over a lifetime. Studies have proven that good oral health is linked to good overall health. Oral health is better in patients who are able to preserve as many natural teeth as possible throughout adulthood. Unfortunately, disease and injury can make that difficult.
When the extensive repair of a tooth is required, saving the root is always the healthiest option. The bone density in the jawbone is maintained by the chewing motions of the teeth and roots. When that motion is lost due to the loss of a root, the bone density will begin to decline quickly. By saving the root of the tooth, the jaw remains healthier.
A root canal is a procedure that repairs the upper portion of the tooth and the inside of the root (usually from infection). A small hole is created to access the root, and the infection is cleaned out. Once cleaned out and dried, it is sealed and filled with gutta-percha (a rubbery compound). The entrance hole is then sealed, and the top of the tooth is prepared for a crown to be placed.
Typically, a temporary crown is required while a permanent one is being made. When ready, the permanent one is placed with a stronger cement. A root canal restores the tooth to its normal function.
