Dental Sealants

Children are more prone to cavities for several reasons. Some children resist sticking to a good brushing routine. Their teeth have so many cracks and crevices that are hard to keep clean. Their mouths are so much smaller, it is hard to get a toothbrush in all the places that need to be cleaned. Most children really like sugary sweets.

Some children just need a little extra help to keep tooth decay from forming. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) endorses dental sealants as a beneficial tool in preventing plaque buildup and slowing tooth decay, citing their efficacy as up to 80% at two years and up to 50% up to four years.

Dental sealants are a rubbery substance that is applied to the teeth with a small brush. When the substance dries, it forms a barrier to keep food and plaque out of the nooks and crannies of the teeth. The application is simple and painless. The sealants are monitored for any damage and can easily be reapplied.

Most dental insurance companies will cover the cost of dental sealants for children up to the age of 18. If you need help determining your insurance benefits, our office can help.
